The shortlist is written by a model now. Be on it before the demo.

Half of B2B software buyers now start in an AI chatbot, not a search engine, and seven in ten chose a different vendor than they planned because of what it said. "Best tool for" is answered in one paragraph with three names in it. Comparison pages, entity work and reviews decide whether one of them is yours.

How buyers choose software now. The chatbot writes the shortlist.

G2 surveyed 1,076 B2B software buyers in March 2026. The research step has moved into the chat window, and it changes what gets bought.

Winners and losers

Same category, same pricing. Two very different pipelines.

The gap isn't the product. It's whether the models that write shortlists can identify what you are, who you're for and how you compare, and whether that matches what reviewers and your own pages say.

The product that makes the shortlist

  • Is a clear entity. One canonical description of what it is, who it's for and what it replaces, repeated consistently on the site, G2, Capterra, GitHub, LinkedIn and Wikipedia-grade sources.
  • Publishes honest comparisons. 'X vs Y' and 'best tools for [job]' pages that concede where a competitor wins, which is exactly what a model quotes.
  • Keeps reviews recent and specific. A steady flow of reviews that name the job, the team size and the outcome, not stars alone.
  • States the price. Per-seat, per-usage, the floor and the ceiling, on a page a model can read.

The product that gets left off

  • Describes itself five ways. 'Platform', 'OS', 'workspace', 'copilot': the model can't tell what category you're in, so it leaves you out of it.
  • 'Contact sales for pricing.' The buyer asked the chatbot for tools under $15 a seat. You weren't an answer.
  • Comparison pages that only win. A model trained on a million reviews knows better and quotes the honest competitor instead.
  • Reviews from the launch year. Two hundred reviews, the newest eighteen months old, about a version you've since replaced.

The promised land

Be one of the three names — and the one whose page confirms it.

Picture the Monday after: the chatbot names you for the job your product is best at, your comparison page is the citation, pricing is right there, and the trial starts without a demo call. The pipeline fills from a conversation you never had to be in.

Humans in the loop · product review

AI drafts the comparison. Your product team signs every claim.

A comparison page that's wrong about a competitor is a legal problem; one that's wrong about you is a churn problem. Nothing about features, pricing, security or a competitor ships without a named reviewer, and nothing from customer accounts ever touches a model.

  • No customer data, ever. Content runs on your public product, never on usage or account data.
  • Competitor claims stay verifiable. Every 'vs' statement sourced to a public page or review, dated.
  • Reviews get a human voice. Replies that acknowledge the specific issue and say what shipped since.
