They were referred to you. Then 96% went and checked.

Advisors, lenders, agencies and planners live on referrals. The referral still happens; what changed is what comes next. Nearly everyone researches an advisor online before calling, half start in a search engine, a quarter now start in an AI, and they want fees, specialization and reviews before they'll book an introductory call. Compliant, expert-reviewed content that the machines still quote is the whole game.

How households choose an advisor now. Referral, then research, then reviews.

Wealthtender's 2025 study of 500 households earning $100K+ who plan to hire an advisor: the referral gets you on the list. The research decides who gets the call.

Winners and losers

Same credentials, same town. Two very different intro-call calendars.

The gap isn't the planning. It's whether a search engine, a directory or an AI can find, trust and quote you, and whether the page answers the four questions a household brings before it will book.

The firm that gets the intro call

  • States fees and fit up front. Fee structure, specialization, fiduciary status and credentials on the page, in that order, because that's the order they're asked.
  • Says the same thing everywhere. Firm name, team, custodian and office details agree on Google, NAPFA, XY Planning, the state registry and the site.
  • Has reviews, compliantly. Testimonials collected and disclosed under the Marketing Rule, on independent sites as well as the firm's own.
  • Replies the same day. Intro-call requests acknowledged instantly, a human scheduling within hours.

The firm that gets the second-opinion email

  • 'Schedule a call to discuss fees.' 62% wanted the fee structure before contact. They found a firm that published it.
  • One 'services' page for everything. Nothing specific enough to quote, so the AI names the planner with a retirement-income explainer.
  • No reviews at all. 17% call that a red flag outright; 33% say negative reviews are, and you have no positives to balance them.
  • A compliance freeze on the website. Nothing new published in two years because review was too slow, so engines treat it as abandoned.

The promised land

Be the firm the answer names — and the one whose fees are already on the page.

Picture the Monday after: the AI answer cites your retirement-income explainer by name, the referral checks out in a minute of reading, the fee page answered the question before the call, and the intro request landed in the right advisor's calendar, compliance-logged, before lunch.

The SEC Marketing Rule, FINRA 2210 and state insurance advertising rules are specific about testimonials, performance and promises. Nothing ships without a named reviewer and an archived copy, and nothing client-identifying ever touches a model.

  • No client data, ever. Content runs on your public expertise, never on accounts or files.
  • Claims stay within the rules. Performance, 'guarantee' and testimonial language reviewed against the Marketing Rule and FINRA 2210; every version archived.
  • Reviews get a human voice. Responses that are warm, specific, and never confirm a client relationship.
